Cataract surgery remains Dr. Kosko's favorite surgery to perform. While in residency at the Hamilton Eye Institute, Dr. Kosko performed more cataract surgeries than any resident in the history of the training program. Dr. Kosko also completed a fellowship at Callahan Eye Hospital/UAB, widely regarded as one of the highest volume fellowships in the country for cataract and glaucoma surgery. In the years since completing training, Dr. Kosko has performed several thousand additional cataract and glaucoma procedures and has significant experience with laser-assisted cataract surgery and premium intraocular lenses to decrease his patients’ dependence on glasses (toric/astigmatism-correcting lenses, multifocal lenses (PanOptix® and TECNIS® multifocal implants), and Extended Depth of Focus/EDOF lenses (TECNIS® Symfony® implants), as well as combining such advanced cataract surgery techniques with minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries to help decrease his patients’ dependence on eye drops.
Dr. Kosko has a deep passion for intraocular lens exchange surgery for patients who have had previous cataract surgery and are unhappy with (or have had complications from) their current intraocular lens implant (the implant placed at the time of their previous/original cataract surgery). Dr. Kosko has significant experience with the Yamane intrascleral haptic fixation technique in complex lens implant surgery and routinely and successfully performs this difficult but superior procedure in cases of secondary intraocular lens insertion. Dr. Kosko’s research is published in peer-reviewed medical journals and he is an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, serving as a Clinician Educator. He has participated in ophthalmic medical mission work in Kenya and the Dominican Republic and is trained in the MSICS procedure (manual small incision cataract surgery), which is used to remove advanced cataracts in third world countries where modern instrumentation is not readily available. While he considers himself privileged to have the MSICS procedure in his skill set, Dr. Kosko is immensely grateful to operate in Jackson Eye Associates' surgery center where the surgeons use the most state-of-the-art ophthalmic microscopes, lasers (such as the LenSx® femtosecond laser cataract surgery laser), and phacoemulsification (cataract) machines available in the world today.

Dr. Kosko grew up in Greenwood, Mississippi where he learned to love ophthalmology at a young age through observing his father (Paul I. Kosko, M.D.) who practiced ophthalmology in Mississippi and loved and served his patients selflessly for over 40 years. The younger Dr. Kosko graduated in the top 10 of his medical school class from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor. He became Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 2015. Dr. Kosko's beautiful wife Susan is from Knoxville, TN and is a physical therapist and former collegiate soccer player. They are the proud parents of Kate (born 2015), Ward (born 2016), Claire (born 2018), and James (born 2020). They are active members of Pear Orchard Presbyterian Church in Ridgeland, MS. Dr. Kosko feels immensely blessed to love what he does, but his family remains his number one priority.

Raised in a rural farming community outside of Yazoo City, MS. Attended Millsaps College but transferred to the University of Mississippi where he received a degree in Biochemistry. Before medical school, Dr. Whittington received a master’s degree in biomedical science from the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he attended medical school. I completed my internship at the University of South Carolina/Palmetto Health in Columbia, SC. After internship, He completed an Ophthalmology residency at West Virginia University Eye Institute in Morgantown, WV and subsequently spent a year as Chief Resident of Ocular and Facial Trauma at West Virginia University Eye Institute. Married for twelve years to wife, Nancy, originally from Natchez, MS and they parent two boys.
